WHITE MICHELLE

WHITE MICHELLE

Michelle White is an original. As a charismatic and compelling performer, she delivers an earthy, passionate brand of music that reflects her spin on a truly unique blend of American influences. An accomplished musician, she plays several instruments, as well as writes and produces, on her debut CD, Memphis, on Sony Records. John Leventhal (whose producing and writing credits include Shawn Colvin's Grammy award winning CD, Sunny Came Home) appears on her CD, as well as her father, who is legendary singer/ songwriter/ guitarist Tony Joe White (the classics Rainy Night in Georgia and Polk Salad Annie ). Her fiery and raw stage performance has been compared to that of "Janis Joplin" or "a young Mick Jagger". Her writing has been compared to "J.J. Cale and Rickie Lee Jones."

She was reared in the musical hotbeds of South Texas, Memphis, Tennessee and the Ozarks. "I was influenced very deeply by everything I heard growing up," she says, "I draw on all the variations of soul music...I like all styles of music an especially unique voices" She singles out an eclectic blend of stylists naming Roberta Flack, Ron Sexsmith, Los Lobos, Sade, J.J. Cale, Van Morrison, Liz Phair, and John Lee Hooker as favorites. The same rich musical stew that colors her performance infuses her songwriting." I write about whatever moves me", she says. Michelle has already shown herself to be a promising young writer with her song "The Apology" co-written with Maia Sharp on Maia's critically acclaimed CD Hardly Glamour on IRS Records. She also co-produced "Waltz of the Scarecrow King" (Texas Guitar Fables and String Quartet) by Gary Myrick along with Grammy Award winning producer /engineer Tchad Blake (Cheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos). In addition, Michelle has attracted a stunning group of sidemen and women who play on her recordings and tour with her inlcuding Jim Christie, Josh Segal, Daris Adkins, James Ralston, Shawn Lee, Mark Addison, Joe Zimmerman, Danny Frankel, Gary Myrick, Maia Sharp, and many more.

In 1999, Michelle had a successful three month tour of Europe, including the prestigious Midem in Cannes, as well as opening for Toto for crowds up to 17,000 people all over France.
In 2001, Michelle took a break from touring to be with her new daughter and to write songs.
She has been back playing festivals all over Europe as well as shows in her native Nashville and Los Angeles.
